Blackpool Tower acrobat: Tearful tribute
Tributes have flooded into The Gazette after the 24 year-old Russian fell during the noon matinee performance on Sunday.
Alan Coates, vice president of the Circus Friends Association, said: “Everyone in the industry is thinking of Rafshan’s family.
“The Pouzanov Troupe are unique – you don’t find 10-piece acts of such award-winning calibre any more, and they won’t be the same without him.”
“I’ve worked in the industry for 50 years and can count on one hand terrible tragedies like this.”
Shocked members of the audience also lavished praise on the young performer, and the entire cast of the circus pantomime.
John Ellis, who was watching with daughter Kali and granddaughter Mia, said: “The Russian troupe that Rafshan was a part of was the highlight of the show.
“All the children loved it, it was a breathtaking display of daring and bravery.
“It is absolutely tragic that this should happen.”
Liza Holmes, of Loughrigg Terrace, Mereside, was in the audience with family and friends.
She said: “I was in tears when I found out, I never thought he would die.”
Sue Needham, of Washington Avenue, Bispham, added: “I remember seeing the acrobat give a cheeky smile before he did the stunt, and I turned to my daughter and commented what a lovely looking lad he was. It’s terrible.”
Mr Alimov was taken to the Blackpool Victoria Hospital following the tragic accident. He was later transferred to special head injuries unit at the Royal Preston Hospital, where he died yesterday.

The Russian performer – who was trying to jump to a chair held above a fellow acrobat’s head – is seriously ill in the special head injuries unit at the Royal Preston Hospital.
Members of the Russian acrobatic troupe immediately stopped the show as they rushed to Mr Alimov’s aid.
Ambulance crews were backstage within four minutes and the injured performer was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
He was later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital.
A spokesman for Blackpool Victoria Hospital last night said: “Mr Alimov is in an extremely serious condition. We transferred him to the special head injuries unit at Royal Preston Hospital.”
Members of the audience, at a Sunday matinee of the pantomime Aladdin, spoke of the incident.
Kali Ellis, eight, was watching with her father John and sister Alicia, three, said: “I thought it was part of the act at first and it was horrible when the man just didn’t get up.”
Despite the accident, once Mr Alimov had been taken to hospital his colleagues continued with their performance.
Geoff Sage, Blackpool Tower General Manager said: “An ambulance and paramedics attended within four minutes and he was conscious and able to talk to them as he received treatment.
“Accidents like this are thankfully rare, but remain a peril of circus performers. Our thoughts at this time are with Rafshan and his family. We wish him a quick recovery.”
Performer Neville Campbell, 20, died instantly when he landed on his head after falling to the ground during the “Wheel of Death” act at Blackpool Tower Circus on Boxing Day in 1994.
